The July Cruise continued

Thursday July 4th: HOT HOT HOT! Happy Birthday America!  We had a little breeze on the mooring. (The only breeze available on the East Coast from all reports.)  Cocktails on TFIN and then beautiful fireworks display from Falmouth and Edgartown, viewed from the mooring.  Note: Forecasts were calling for winds to swing to Northerly, which can make for a rolling, uncomfortable stay outside the breakwater.  You can ask the harbormaster for a mooring inside or move into Lagoon Pond.  Unfortunately they are having technical difficulties with the bridge so it only opens (as of this

writing) at 8:30 am.  We all decided to chance it and luckily had a pleasant night with a NW breeze.  Also of note to the cruising sailor; the Tisbury Inn burned down last winter.  They are planning to rebuild so hopefully the new inn will still offer the chance to get a nice hot shower.

Saturday July 6th: Had a wonderful dinner at our favorite restaurant, Le Grenier. Escargot and clams casino for starters, followed by tournedos, salmon, scallops and lamb for entrees.  All dishes were proclaimed DELISH!  A toast was offered to Jim and Jan  who celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary that night!

Sunday July 7th: Hazy, strange looking. Wind 8-12 kts NNW.  Back through Woods Hole, we went by a boat whose occupants were waving and hollering to get our attention, we waved back but were perplexed about the hoopla. (We found out on the way home when we ran into them back in Cuttyhunk that it was Jean and Leo on ANTARES just trying to say howdy!).

Nobska Point light in the "fire" haze

LIBERTY joined us off Quissett, where Art had sailed the evening before to drop Peg off for her return home.   Sailed from just off Quissett to Cleveland Ledge Light, looking over our shoulders the whole time because the sky looked so oddly ominous.  We were sure there were thunderheads building up somewhere, but then we heard on the radio that the strange haze was the soot from the wildfires in Quebec.  At the top of the Hog Island Channel we took a left into the channel for Onset Harbor.  The channel is well marked, but it takes three good jogs so I wouldn't want to try it in the fog!
Point Independence Yacht Club had plenty of moorings for us and we were happy to hear that they also had showers and ice.  We were even happier to hear that they had a washer and dryer!  Interesting club, mostly powerboats from what we could see.  The clubhouse is good sized and they have a fish fry every Friday night.  If enough members are interested, and someone volunteers to bartend, they will open on Saturday nights also.  The bar in their function room upstairs is made from the stern of a large wooden powerboat that has been beautifully restored.  The name on the stern is ON THE ROCKS.
